Helping students understand mathematics, grow in confidence and achieve the results they need

Attentive one-to-one maths tuition shaped around how each student thinks, where they hesitate and what they are capable of achieving.

I am based in Wilmslow and offer mathematics tuition for lower-secondary, GCSE, IGCSE, A-level Maths and Further Maths students, with IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) tuition also available at SL and HL. Tuition is available locally in Cheshire East and South Manchester, and online across the UK and internationally.

When maths starts to feel difficult

Students come to tuition for many reasons.

Some are anxious about maths. Some feel they are struggling to keep up. Some are doing reasonably well, but know they could do better. Others are aiming high and want to strengthen their understanding, refine their technique or work at greater depth.

Mathematics is important, but the pressure attached to it can make young people feel judged by their performance. Good tuition should help students make progress without adding to that sense of judgement.

My aim is to help students understand more clearly, think more independently and approach mathematics with greater confidence.

Thoughtful one-to-one tuition

One-to-one tuition allows us to notice what can be missed in a classroom.

I listen carefully to how a student explains an idea, where they pause, which steps they avoid and what they already understand. Lessons are responsive and purposeful. We work at the student’s pace while keeping their goals firmly in view.

Sometimes that means slowing down and rebuilding a foundation. Sometimes it means practising a method until it becomes secure. Sometimes it means exploring a harder question, testing a misconception or helping a student express their reasoning more clearly.

The work is individual, but it is not vague. I care about understanding, confidence and results.

In one-to-one tuition, small things matter.

A hesitation.

A partially formed idea.

A method used without confidence.

A step the student avoids.

A moment where understanding emerges.

Results matter

Students and families often come to tuition with clear goals: a stronger GCSE grade, confidence before A-level, support with Further Maths, preparation for examinations or a need to recover after a difficult period.

Those goals matter.

But the best results are not built only through pressure or repeated drilling. They come from understanding what is being asked, knowing how to begin, communicating reasoning clearly, practising intelligently and becoming more willing to think.

I want students to make progress in a way that feels secure, honest and sustainable.

Experience and subject knowledge

I have been tutoring mathematics full time for seventeen years, working with hundreds of students through thousands of hours of face-to-face tuition and thousands of hours online.

My academic background gives me a deep command of the subject. I hold a First Class Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Oxford and was twice awarded the Antony Nathan Prize for outstanding examination performance.

That subject knowledge matters because it allows me to explain flexibly, respond to unexpected ideas, create suitable questions and support students at depth. But good tuition is never just about what the tutor knows. The real work is in meeting the student in front of me: noticing how they think, explaining with care, adapting intelligently and helping them make progress in a way that feels possible.
